Prepare your Trip

Passport

For your vacation, no visa will be necessary as you will stay in the country less than 90 days. However, you will need a valid passport for the entire duration of your trip ( and it has to be valid for the next 6 months after your return date from the Inca trail). It will also be very important to keep your Andean migratory card which you will get at the airport, you will need it all along your stay.

Health

Vaccines :

There are no obligatory vaccines to enter Peru. However, it is recommended to get the yellow fever shot if you plan to stay some days in Amazonia. Attention, to enter Bolivia, it is necessary to have done the yellow fever shot!

The mountain sickness – El soroche :

Because of altitude, it is possible that you get mountain sickness. It is due to the little amount of oxygene available at that altitude. What happens into your organism is that your red blood cells  will have troubles to oxygenate your bloodand so your body will react consecuently. Mountain sickness generally arises few hours after the beginning of your ascent.

What are the symptoms?

The symptoms can be nausea, vomiting, insomnia, a general tiredness, dizzinesses, disorders of equilibrium and a lack of appetite.

Are we all concerned?

We are all concerned by mountain sickness! It doesn't matter whether we are in good shape or not, athletic or not, smoker or non smoker; evreybody needs to be careful.

Our tips :

First of all, go easy on the ascent. There is no need to rush, it is better to take your time in order to help your body acclimatize itself to the altitud. Secondly, it is important to constantly stay hydrated, do not wait till you are thirsty to drink. In order to reduce mountain sickness, the locals chew coca leaves. Coca leaves can also be brewed as tea. Finally, we recommand you to  to consult your doctor before leaving, he'll be able to give you the right medication.

Food

During your stay, wether if it is in Peru, Bolivia or Chile, we recommand that you pay close attention to those particular points:

  • Never drink tap water, even the locals don't drink it!

  • Avoid raw fruits and vegetables, which have not been peeled or cooked. Same goes for the meet.

  • We also advise you not to eat non industrial dairy products.
